Hello, world
Every few years I promise myself I’ll start writing things down. This time the excuse ran out: the site is up, it costs almost nothing, and publishing a post is one command.
How it’s built
The whole thing is static. Posts are Markdown files, Hugo turns them into plain HTML, and the result sits in a private S3 bucket behind CloudFront. There’s no server, no database, and no JavaScript framework.
| Piece | What it does | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| S3 | Stores the files | A few cents |
| CloudFront | Serves them fast, over HTTPS | Free tier |
| ACM | The TLS certificate | Free |
| Route 53 | DNS for kondala.info | $0.50 |
Even the video at the top of the homepage is about 300 KB, generated with ffmpeg from a couple of color gradients.
Publishing
Writing a post means adding a file to content/posts/ and running:
./deploy.sh
That builds the site, syncs it to S3, and clears the CDN cache.
More soon.
